chapter 16 Acids and bases Flashcards
Acid ahhrenius definition
a substance that produces H+ ions in aqueous solution
base definition
a substance that produces OH- ions in aqueous solution
show that a substance is an acid or a base by the ahhrenius definition
show the dissociation. dont break down into all ions
just split off the OH- or the H+
leave the reast alone
difference between a strong and weak acid
strong acids completely ionate into H+ (single arrow)
weak acids dont completely ionize (double arrow)
bronstead lowry acid and base
based on the transfer of H+
Bronstead Lowrey acid
loses(donates) an H+
Bronstead Lowrey base
gains(recieves) an H+
conjugate base
the bronstead lowry acid without the H it donated
conjugate acid
the bronstead lowry base with the H it recieved
Ph related to H30
-log(H3O)
converting H3O to OH- M
10^-14/the one you have
autoionization
able to be an acid and a base and sometimes both at the same time
strength of Acids and bases
