chapter 16 Flashcards
autonomic nervous system
- non conscious instruction
- controls visceral effectors and coordinates system functions
what neurons does the somatic nervous system include?
sensory and motor
the autonomic nervous system receives input from
sensory receptors found in organs, muscles and blood vessels
the autonomic nervous system regulates activity of
smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and glands
what is the ANS regulated by?
centers in the hypothalamus and medulla oblongata
what are preganglionic fibers?
axons of preganglionic neurons that synapse on ganglionic neurons
ganglionic neurons innervate
visceral effectors (smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands)
what neurotransmitters are used in the ANS? SNS?
acetylcholine & norepinephrine , acetylcholine
where are sensory receptors for the ANS located?
Organs, blood vessels, muscles and nervous system
what are post ganglionic fibers?
axons of post ganglionic neurons
where are dendrites located
In the autonomic ganglion
In the sympathetic division where are cell bodies of preganglionic neurons found?
In the lateral horns of the gray matter
In the parasympathetic division where are cell bodies of preganglionic neurons found?
Nuclei of four cranial nerves III, IX, X & VII
in the brain stem & lateral segments of gray matter in sacral vertebrae
sympathetic ganglia
Site of synapse between pre and post ganglionic neurons
How many motor neurons in an autonomic motor pathway?
Two motor neurons
1st one in the CNS & 2nd is unmyelinated and extends from ganglion to effector
