Q

List and define the three functions of the digestive system

A

Digestion – breaks down food into molecules the body can use
Absorption – the molecules are absorbed into the blood and carried throughout the body

Q

What are the six nutrients and their roles in the body

A

Carbohydrates- providing energy and provide the raw materials to make cell parts
Fat – providing energy, form part of the cell membrane, fatty tissue protects and supports your internal organs, and insulates your body
Proteins – Raw materials for tissue growth and repair, and play an important part in chemical reactions within cells used as enzymes
Vitamins – help out molecules in a variety of chemical reactions in the body and help the body carry out various processes: enzymes
Minerals – needed by your body in small amounts to carry out chemical processes
Water – most important nutrient because the bodies vital processes – including chemical reactions such as the breakdown of nutrients – take place in water

complex- many sugar molecules linked together in a chain

18
Q

What is the difference between complete and incomplete proteins

A

Complete- food that contain all the essential amino acids

incomplete- foods that are missing one or more essential amino acid

19
Q

What is the difference between unsaturated and saturated fats

Q

Explain to ways that your mouth helps to digest food

A

Mechanical – chewing

chemical – breaking down with enzymes

22
Q

Why must vegetarians eat a variety of proteins to obtain all the nutrients they need

A

So that you get a complete protein
