The public as a group can form shared views which guide their actions
Public sphere
Idealized conversation space in which people discuss their interests separate from the interests of the state and civil society
Sound bites
Length of time a news subject is allowed to speak without being edited. Short and catchy. Bush “you are either with us or with the terrorists.”
Opinion poll
Conducted by a professional polling organization asking members of the public their opinions on issues or political candidates
Push poll
Appears to be a telephone poll but actually a telemarketing campaign that sways voters by giving them false or misleading information about opposing candidates
How is political communication and campaigning changing online?
Can to website to see their stance or make a donation. Can volunteer, check fact checking sites. Social media (Obamas team) got people to register to vote
Difference between slander and libel
Slander: spoken, that damaged a persons reputation or caused harm
Libel: written or published, such as a false attack which damaged a persons reputation
Shield laws
A law intended to protect journalists from legal challenges to report the news
