Immanuel Kant: actions should be decided on moral laws that would apply to everyone. Act for benefits of others. Advertising firms turning down tobacco company’s
Discourse ethics
Habernas. Communication practiced without bias is brought about by rational interaction and argument. All sides deserve to be heard, not who is dominant. Justice and equality.
Utilitarianism
The ethical action is what does the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Ex: testing on a small number of animals for medicines not cosmetics. Social marketing.
Social marketing
Use of advertising and marketing techniques for social causes such as anti smoking or safe sex campaigns.
Social Justice
Fairness is the fundamental idea in the concept of justice. Parties should step behind a veil of ignorance. Fair decisions are made if one sets aside all previous personal knowledge.
Dialogical ethics
Tries to accept other views without judgement. Don’t force own agenda
Ethics of care
Feminist ethics. Male virtues are accepted as better. Places emphasis on relationship. Grounded in real life not abstract theories. Caring for oneself and for others within context of real life. Male isn’t normal.
Moral relativism
None of the ethical systems are better than another. What’s right in our culture is wrong in another
Issues in ethical decision making
Media organizations don’t report their own mistakes. Utilitarian: workers in bad work condition, they’ll be out of jobs. Ethics of care v categorical imperative: not publishing story of wife’s arrest goes against publishing the name of everyone arrested.
Role if commercialism in ethics
Media is a culture industry- want a product known, have to go through the media. Conflicting goals of serving public with information and maximizing profit for business. Commercial interests can take precedent. Newspapers can become associated with stories that advertisers don’t like and withdraw.
Media types influencing content
Film could be produced if media company owns rights. Book publishers may feel pressure to publish already established authors for sales instead of new ones
Cultural imperialism
One country dominating media market. Domestic media companies can’t develop with influx of foreign material
