Chapter 15 Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
The process of using electricity to break down or decompose a compound (usually an ionic compound in the molten state or in aqueous solution).
What is electroplating?
The process of depositing a layer of metal on another substance using electrolysis.
What is a simple cell?
A device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. It is also known as an electric cell.
Where are 2 metals of different reactivity placed in a simple cell?
The more reactive metal becomes the negative electrode and the less reactive metal becomes the positive electrode.
The further apart the two metals (electrodes) are in the reactivity series, the (…) the voltage produced in the cell?
greater the voltage produced in the cell
