Chapter 12 Flashcards
1
Q
Describe salts
A
Salts:
- are ionic compounds, containing a cation and an anion
- can be made by reacting acids with metals, carbonates, bases or alkalis
2
Q
What are some reactions producing a salt?
A
- MASH
- CASWC
- BASW
- AASW
- AAsSAW
3
Q
Expound on water of crystallisation.
A
Many salts combine with water molecules to form crystals. These water molecules are known as water of crystallisation. The water of crystallisation can be removed by heating hydrated salts that would turn into anhydrous salts.
4
Q
Classify soluble and insoluble salts.
A
Soluble salts:
- All SPA salts
- All nitrates
- All chlorides except silver and lead(II)
- All sulfates except calcium (sparingly soluble), barium and lead(II)
Insoluble salts:
- All carbonates except SPA carbonates
5
Q
What are the 3 methods for preparing salts?
A
- Reaction of acid with an insoluble substance
- Titration
- Precipitation
