Chapter 13 Flashcards
When does oxidation take place? (Hint: recall mnemonic)
It occurs when a substance gains oxygen, loses hydrogen, loses electrons or when its oxidation state increases.
When does reduction happen?
Reduction occurs when a substance loses oxygen, gains hydrogen, gains electrons or when its oxidation state decreases.
What is a redox reaction?
A chemical reaction involving the oxidation of a substance and the reduction of another substance.
What is oxidation state?
It is the charge that an atom of an element would have if it existed as an ion in a compound. (This is true even if it is actually covalently bonded)
What is an oxidising agent?
A substance which causes another substance to be oxidised.
What is a reducing agent?
A substance which causes another substance to be reduced.
