Chapter 14 Flashcards
What is an alloy?
A mixture of a metal with one or a few other elements.
How are metals arranged in the reactivity series?
From the most reactive to the least reactive.
What characteristics do more reactive metals possess?
- Greater tendency to form positive ions than a less reactive metal
- Able to displace a less reactive metal from its salt solution
- Able to reduce the oxide of a less reactive metal
How does reactivity of a metal affect its oxides’ ability to be reduced by carbon or hydrogen?
The more reactive a metal is, the more difficult it is to reduce its oxide to the metal by carbon or hydrogen.
How does reactivity of a metal affect its carbonate’s ability to be decomposed by heat?
The more reactive a metal is, the more difficult it is to decompose its carbonate by heat.
What is steel?
An alloy of iron with carbon and/or other metals.
What are the conditions for rusting to ensue?
The presence of:
- air (oxygen)
- water
