Chapter 14: Stress Flashcards
Stress
is any uncomfortable “emotional experience accompanied by predictable biochemical, physiological and behavioral changes
Tend and Befriend
refers to protection of offspring (tending) and seeking out the social group for mutual defense (befriending). In evolutionary psychology, tend-and-befriend is theorized as having evolved as the typical female response to stress, just as the primary male response was fight-or-flight.
Oxytocin
otherwise known as the love hormone, is released by the pituitary gland and is responsible for human behaviors associated with relationships and bonding. It is most commonly used to help mothers produce contractions in labor and control bleeding
Telomeres
The end of a chromosome. The ends of chromosomes are specialized structures that are involved in the replication and stability of DNA molecules.
Type A
In this theory, personalities that are more competitive, highly organized, ambitious, impatient, highly aware of time management and/or aggressive are labeled Type A
Type B
are noted to live at lower stress levels. They typically work steadily, and may enjoy achievement, although they have a greater tendency to disregard physical or mental stress when they do not achieve
General Adaption Syndrome
A nonspecific general response to noxious stimuli (“stressors”)
