Chapter 14 part 2: families and discipline Flashcards
Discipline
Training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral
character
System of rules governing conduct or activity
Operant Conditioning
Positive Reinforcer
Negative Reinforcer
Punishment
Response Cost
Most effective reinforcement schedule
Intermittent (partial)
Reward after certain number of responses
Positive Discipline
There are no bad children, just bad and good behaviors
Focuses on reinforcing positive behaviors
Discourages use of rewards or punishment
Focuses on building self-esteem and
positive social skills
Problems with the Positive Discipline Model
Too focused on self-esteem building and not accountability
Takes a long time to modify behavior when no response cost or punishment is used
Often is not powerful enough to address significant defiant, oppositional, and/or aggressive behavior
Middle ground
Positive discipline + behavior modification
Maintains focus on positive behavior
and skill-building as much as possible, but addresses negative behavior when necessary
Promotes respect and self-esteem
Promotes self-control and
accountability
Prevention
Try to foresee problematic situations to prevent meltdowns and misbehavior
Praise
Create esteem/positive regard
Whenever possible, praise the behaviors you want to see repeated
Active ignoring
Avoid negative reinforcement by ignoring misbehavior
Rewards and Response Cost
Use Positive Reinforcement to create, shape, and maintain desired behaviors
Use response cost instead of punishment to extinguish negative behaviors
Don’t give in to negative reinforcement
