What is organizational culture?
The values and assumptions shared within an organization
What does organizational culture consist of?
Shared values, shared assumptions
What are some characteristics of organizational cultures?
- Innovation
- Stability
- Respect for people
- Outcome orientation

- Aggressiveness
What are the types of cultures within an organization?
We got the dominant (main) culture
We got subculture that are variants of the dominant culture
Then we got countercultures
What are artifacts
The observable symbols and signs of an organization’s culture
What are rituals?
Programmed routines of daily organizational life that dramatize the organization’s culture
What are ceremonies?
Planned displays of organizational culture, conducted specifically for the benefit of an audience
What three important functions make companies more effective?
- Control system
- Social glue
- Sense-making
What are some contingencies of organizational culture and effectiveness?
- Culture Content is Aligned with the External Environment
- Culture Strength Is Not the Level of a Cult
- Culture is an adaptive culture (employees are receptive to change)
What is a bicultural audit?
A process of diagnosing cultural relations between companies and determining the extent to which cultural clashes will likely occur
What are some strategies for merging different organizational cultures?
- Assimilation

What is the attraction-selection-attrition (ASA) theory?
A theory that states that organizations have a natural tendency to attract, select, and retain people with values and personality characteristics that are consistent with the organization’s character, resulting in a more homogeneous organization and a stronger culture
What is organizational socialization?
The process by which individuals learn the values, expected behaviours, and social knowledge necessary to assume their roles in the organization
What is a psychological contract?
The individual’s beliefs about the terms and conditions of a reciprocal exchange agreement between that person and another party
What are the two ends of the psychological contract spectrum?
Relational —— Transactional
