A

Poddar hinted he was going to kill Tarasoff in a session. Therapist believed this threat was serious and contacted the campus police, who received assurances from Poddar that he would leave Tarasoff alone. Weeks later Poddar shot and killed Tarasoff.

A

Legal procedure by which a person found not guilty of a crime by reason of insanity must be confined in a psychiatric hospital.

Accused of committing a crime, detainment in a mental health facility for evaluation, focus on fitness to stand trial, found guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity

What is the process of insanity defense?

A

Incompetent to stand trial, treated, competent for trial, they then look normal to the jury and have to convince the jury they were insane when the crime was committed. Has to be a psychological reason for the insane state during crime, not substance induced.

What was the instance of public misperceptions and outrage at insanity defense?

A

John Hinckley Jr. (guy who shot Reagan) found not guilty by reason of insanity. Everyone thought he was going to be set free when really he would be institutionalized probably for life.
