psychological disorder
No single definition. Psychological dysfunction associated with distress or impairment in functioning that is not a typical or culturally expected response
psychological dysfunction
a breakdown in cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning. the behavior is outside of cultural norms.
impairment
problems with job, relationships, daily routine. Set on context of a person’s background and culture
prevalence
number of people displaying a disorder in the total population at any given time
incidence
number of new cases of a disorder appearing during a specific period
onset of disorders
acute: begin suddenly
insidious onset: develop gradually over an extended period of time
course of disorders
episodic: the individual is likely to recover within a few months only to suffer a recurrence of the disorder a a later time.
time-limited: meaning they will improve without treatment in a relatively short period.
chronic: they tend to last a long time.
prognosis
good vs. guarded
whether i think you have a good shot with the diagnosis
etiology
cause or source of a disorder (multiple causes)
Classical Conditioning
Pavlov. An event that automatically elicits a response is paired with another stimulus event that does not (a neutral stimulus). After repeated pairings, the neutral stimulus becomes a conditioned stimulus that by itself can elicit the desired response.
Operant Conditioning
Reinforcers, Punishers, + addition, - negative
