Chapter 14 - Ergonomic Principles Flashcards
Semi-Fowlers
Supine w/ head 15-45 (MC 30 degrees)
Prevents regurgitation/aspiration
Promotes lung expansion (Dyspnea or ventilation)
Fowlers
Supine w/ head 45-60
Nasogastric insertion or suctioning
Better drainage post ABD surgery
High-Fowlers
Supine w/ head 60-90
Helps relieve severe dyspnea (diaphragm exp)
Supine or Dorsal Recumbent
Lies on back w/ head and shoulders on pillow
Req foot support to PVT foot drop
Prone
Lies flat on abdomen
Pillow under leg provides comfort
Allows for drainage post oral surgery (limits chest exp)
PVTs hip flexion contractures
Lateral or Side-laying
Lies on side w/ most weight on dependent hip/shoulder
Arms in flexion in front
Sims or Semi-prone
- Lies on side halfway between lateral and prone
- Wgt is on anterior ileum, humerus, clavicle
- Lower arm is behind
- Upper arm is in front
- Upper leg greater flexion than lower leg
- Comfortable for sleep post oral surgery
Orthopneic
Pt sits w/ pillow on overbed table for arm support
COPD pts
Trendelenburg
Bed tilted - head lower than feet.
Postural drainage and venous return promotion
Reverse Trendelenburg
Bed tilted - feet lower than head.
Gastric emptying and PVTs reflux
Modified Trendelenburg
Client flat w/ legs above level of heart
Hypovolemia and venous return.
