Chapter 13: Restoration Ecology Flashcards
Ecological Restoration
Using science and pragmatic approaches
to restoring damaged ecosystems. These projects range from modest to ambitious
What is an example of a successful ecological restoration project?
The Florida Everglades
What are some common elements of restoration?
Removing Physical Stressors – pollutants, inadequate moisture, vehicle traffic, etc. Controlling Invasive Species Replanting Captive breeding and reestablish fauna Monitoring
When was the first wildlife refuge established in the U.S?
1903; Pelican Island near Cape Canaveral
What is the first step in restoration?
Protection
What can we do to help restore forests?
Pick up litter, remove invasive species, replant native species, plant a tree
The level of what increases after fires?
Biodiversity
What types of plants are removed after a fire?
Weeds and choking plants
“A major fire every __ years is helpful.” Fill in the blank.
10 years
Fire is crucial for what kind of restoration?
Prairie
Where is the nearest prairie to us?
Payne’s Prairie, in southern Alachua county
Buffalo Commons
Where bison and other wildlife roam freely on prairie land. Such huge areas are being preserved in the Great Plains,
shortgrass prairie
How do bison help prairies?
They tend to do rotational grazing in their own herds
Wetland Mitigation
Replacing a damaged wetland with a substitute
What two wetlands are being worked on now?
The Florida Everglades and Chesapeake Bay.
Florida Everglades: The Florida Everglades are being replumbed. This is a huge expensive project. The Everglades provide very fertile land when drained; so that’s
what farmers did. The new engineering plan restores water to the Everglades but institutes control measures to prevent flooding.
Chesapeake Bay: The Chesapeake Bay is being rehabilitated. As the largest, richest estuary in the US, its ecology is important to us. Six states are contributing to the
project financially. Progress is going very slowly.
