Chapter 13: Meninges, Ventricles, and CSF Flashcards
what are the two layers of the dura mater (the outermost meninge of the brain)
periosteal dura and the meningeal dura
what are the dural venous sinuses and what do they do?
they form where the two layers of the dura mater separate and they function in draining the venous blood from the brain
what are ventricals in the brain and how do they function?
spaces within the brain that are lined with ependymal cells which produce cerebral spinal fluid
list the ventricles of the brain
lateral (separated by “septa pellucidum”
third (within diencephalon)
fourth (associated with pons and medulla oblongata)
what parts of the brain connect the ventricles together?
interventricular foramina: joining lateral ventricles with third
cerebral aqueduct: continuous with the spinal cord
what is cerebral spinal fluid and what is its function?
a clear fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It provides protection and cushion but also provides nutrients as it is packed with proteins
what is the blood brain barrier and what are the three components?
endothelial cells (lining the capillaries) have tight junctions between them.
Astrocytes have foot processes that influence capillary permeability.
