Chapter 12: Spinal Cord, Meninges, and Tissue Flashcards
spinal cord location
starts at the foramen magnum and ends at the sacrum. It is divided into secgments (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral)
spinal nerves
31 pairs extending from the spinal cord
cervical enlargement
supplies upper limbs
lumbar enlargement
supplies lower limbs
conus medullaris
tapered inferior end
cauda equina
origins of spinal nerves extending inferiorly from lumbosacral enlargement and conus medullaris
meninges
the layers that surround the brain and spinal cord
dura mater
continuous with the epinerium of the spinal nerves. Is the thickest of the tissues.
arachnoid mater
thin and wispy.
pia mater
bound tightly to surface of brain and spinal cord
epidural space
true space around the spinal cord that contains blood vessels, nerve roots, areolar connective tissue, and adipose tissue
subdural space
only contains a small amount of serous fluid.
subarachnoid space
contains some arachnoid mater, blood vessels, and cerebrospinal fluid
commissures
connections between left and right halves
roots
spinal nerves arise as rootlets and then combine to form roots
