Chapter 11: Nervous Tissue Function and Division Flashcards
Nerve
A collections of many axons bundled together outside th brain and spinal cord
neurons
the electrically excitable cells of the nervous system
axon
the end of the neuron that sends electrical signals
cranial nerves
12 pairs, originate from the brain
spinal nerves
31 pairs that originate from the spinal cord
ganglia
clusters of cell bodies outside the brain and spinal cord
plexus
a bundle of nerves outside the brain and spinal cord
glial cells
supportive cells that serve many functions for the neurons
what are the five functions of the nervous system?
maintaining homeostasis
receiving sensory input
integrating information
controlling muscles and glands
establishing and maintaining mental activity
central nervous system
receives information and sneds information to the body
peripheral nervous system
responsible for detecting stimuli in and around the body and sending that information to the CNS and then communicating messages from the CNS to the body.
sensory receptors
detect stimuli and then send input along the nerves which extend from the receptor to the brain and spinal cord.
distributed around the body
sensory division
transmits electrical signals from specialized receptors in the body toward the CNS
sensory (affarent)
moving signals toward the CNS
motor (efferent)
moving signals away from the CNS to the effector organs
