What is a theory x manager?
believe ppl are basically lazy and that coercion and threats of punishment are often necessary to get them to work
what is a theory y manager?
believes that under the right conditions ppl not only will work hard but will seek increased responsibility and challenge
what is a theory z manager?
believes that workers seek opportunities to participate in management and are motivated by teamwork and responsibility
what are the 3 styles of leadership
authoritarian: the use of work-centered behavior designed to ensure task accomplishment
paternalistic: the use of work-centered behavior coupled with protective employee centered concern
participative leadership: the use of both work or task centered approaches to leading subordinates
high achieving
If an individual is high-achieving, then he or she may be driven by intrinsic factors (the most motivated when a creative and supportive environment is provided) -> the participative leadership style.
low-achieving
Low-achieving groups are driven by extrinsic factors (supervisor behavior toward subordinates) -> the authoritarian style (this group prefers to be told what to do).
what are the most transformational leaders and managers characterized by?
- idealized influence: enhance pride, loyalty, and confidence in their people; align followers by proving common purpose or vision that the latter willingly accept
- inspirational motivational: extremely effective in articulating vision, mission, beliefs in clear-cut ways
- intellectual simulation: able to get followers to question old paradigms and accept new views of world and how things should be done
- individualized consideration: able to diagnose and elevate needs of each follower in way that furthers each one’s development
what are affective cultures?
cultures in which leaders tend to exhibit their emotions
what are neutral cultures
cultures in which leaders tend not to show emotions
