What is Information systems management?
First we need to determine if it is IS or IT,
IS (Information Systems) it traditionally the business applications used by the company
IT (Information Technology) is traditionally the technology underneath all systems and applications
What are the functions of an IT department?
- plan use of IT to accomplish organizational goals and strategy
- manage outsourcing relationships
- protect information assets
- develop, operate, maintain computing infrastructure
- develop, operate, maintain applications
What is outsourcing?
“The process of a company hiring another company to perform a service for which company A is not necessarily an ‘expert’ in aka Core Competency
What are reasons for outsourcing IT?
Management advantages: obtain expertise, avoid management problems, free management time
cost reduction: obtain part-time services, gain economies of scale
risk reduction: cap financial exposure, improve quality, reduce implementation risk
what are user’s rights and responsibilities for risk reduction?
-caps financial risk
-ensures quality or avoids substandard quality
less likely to pick wrong hardware, software, network protocol, or implement tax law changes incorrectly
-vendor’s responsible for managing risks
