Chapter 13 Flashcards
Denudation
Removing surface
As landscapes and forces acting on them change,
Surface constantly responds in search of equilibrium.
Dynamic Equilibrium Model
Balancing act between tectonic uplift and reduction by weathering and erosion
Endogenic
processes create landscapes
Exogenic
processes destroy or modify landscapes
Geomorphic threshold
Enough energy to overcome resistance against movements
Frost Wedging
Water gets in joints, freezes pressure expands gaps.
Pressure-release jointing
Jointing of large rock masses into thin layers as a
result of releasing pressure (exfoliation sheets)
Root Wedging
Growing roots force joints apart, like roots under a sidewalk.
Salt Wedging
Similar to ice wedging but salt growth is what causes the pressure.
Dissolution (and acid formation)
minerals completely dissolve in water
Oxidation
reaction of oxygen with iron; iron atom loses electrons
Rust
Hydrolysis
water chemically reacts with minerals and breaks them down
Karst
Limestone formations that have chemically weathered
Stalactites
Roof spikes
