Q

MOST COMMON?

A

water loss due to KINKS
CONSTITUTE A WATER LOSS WHEN THEY ARE SEVERE ENOUGH TO REDUCE THE EXTINGUISHMENT CAPABILITIES OF A HOSELINE…when this occurs…TRANSMIT URGENT MESSAGE(sever kinks)
-essential that IC…units operating on fire floor and floor above, be notified of water loss situation
NOTE: ENGINE OFFICER (bluff-ladder officer/IC) should ENSURE that the fire is CONFINED by CLOSING A DOOR AND /OR ALL MEMBERS ARE MOVED TO ASAFE AREA OF REFUGE IF NECESSARY

-KINKS ARE ALSO EASIEST PROBLEM TO CORRECT

Q

Effectively controlling the number of lengths (control FF ) in stretch will ___kinks?

A

MINIMIZE

-key is to have extra hose, NOT EXCESSIVE AMOUNT

Q

What is indication there are kinks?

A

Engine officer calls for ADDITIONAL PRESSURE and ECC RESPONDS that sufficient PRESSURE is being supplied ….but REDUCTION in flow is showing on outlet flowmeter

do NOT correct kinks by increasing pressure

Q

Who will initiate action to correct kinks in hoseline?

A

ENGINE OFFICER
-dispatch CONTROL FF to correct problem and /or requesting assistance from the IC

problem should also be addressed by SECOND DUE ENGINE OFFICER

Q

Burst Length (constitues water loss, when it is sever enough to reduce the extinguishing capabilities )…indication ?

A

Engine officer reports little or no water and the ECC sees an ADEQUATE PRESSURE READING AND INCREASED FLOW SHOWING ON THE OUTLET FLOW METER WITH THE PUMPS RPMS INCREASING AUTOMATICALLY

Q

Water loss due to burst length CONFIRMED, TRANSMIT ?

A

URGENT
-essential that IC, members operating on fire floor and floor above are notified

-engine officer takes immediate action to correct this problem

Q

All ENGINE COMPANIES are required to store a _______on the apparatus in an easily accessible location?

A

EXTRA LENGTH of 1 3/4” hose, with CONTROLLING NOZZLE attached,

  • this hose or 2 1/2” hose folds on the apparatus for standpipe operations can be used to replace a burst length or added to a short stretch as necessary
  • engine officer will dispatch member to obtain the appropriate replacement length

Q

Once the location of burst length is verified and AFTER the water is shut down, there are 2 ways to correct a burst length:

A

A. if ENOUGH HOSE IS AVAILABLE, REMOVE the burst length and reattach the existing couplings

B. replace burst length with a NEW LENGHT of hose, when there is not enough hose in stretch
**Note: above ONLY accomplished upon the ENGINE OFFICERS ORDERS, AFTER FIRE HAS BEEN CONFINED BY CLOSING DOOR AND /OR MEMBERS HAVE MOVED TO A SAFE AREA OF REFUGE **

  • once replaced, engine officer is notified and in turn notifies ECC to start water
  • Engine OFFICER NOTIFY IC and members on fire floor and floor above problem IS CORRECTED

Q

LINE PRESSURE is pressure necessary to obtain the correct water flow?

A

LINE PRESSURE: SIZE +NUMBER OF LENGTHS OF HOSE+ NOZZLE PRESSURE AND ELEVATION

Q

If a handline is stretched short, the CORRECTIVE actions that need to be taken will be determined by the ?

A

size of hose line (1 3/4” or 2 1/2”) and whether or not SHUTTING DOWN the water supply is suitable for the fire condition

Q

Water shutdown is required when adding hose to _________with a 1 3/4” handline or 2 1/2” handline?

A

BACK OF STRETCH
-ECC, when ordered , will shut down and DRAIN LINE AT PUMPER (standpipe operation, shut down line at FLOOR OUTLET)
-ECC and other members will add ADDITIONAL LENGTHS at pumper or floor outlet
-Adding hose to BACK OF STRETCH requires that hose be moved up along the entire length of the stretch in order for the line to advance…this may be IMPRACTICAL where more than 4 lengths of hose was originally deployed
NOTE: IF 6 lead lengths of 1 3/4” hose have already been stretched , ONLY a length of 2 1/2” hose can be added

Q

When adding hose to the FRONT of a stretch?

A

WATER SHUTDOWN IS NOT REQUIRED
-this procedure varies depending on 1 3/4” or 2 1/2” hose

Q

1 3/4HOSE LINE:

A
  • length of 1 3/4” with NOZZLE ATTACHED, is brought to front of line
  • TIP REMOVED from original nozzle and an EXTRA LENGTH is added by connecting the FEMALE BUTT to the SHUT OFF
  • in order to charge , OPEN SHUTOFF from original nozzle (acting as inline gate)
  • this will allow units to add lengths of hose without shutting down at pumper

NOTE : ENGINE OFFICER must ENSURE that shutoff does NOT ACCIDENTALLY GET SHUT DOWN*

-for fire in a NON-fireproff MD without a well hole, sufficient hose may be found by raising the already charged hose line over the newel post onto the railing

17
Q

2 1/2” HOSE LINE:

A
  • a length of 2 1/2” hose with nozzle attached is brought to front of the line
  • tip is removed from the nozzle and a **1 1/2” x 2 1/2” INCREASER is connected to shut off..
  • NEW LENGTH of 2 1/2” hose is added by connecting the female butt to the fitting on the shutoff
  • in order to charge the new lead length , open the shut off form the ORIGINAL NOZZLE, which is acting as an inline gate
  • Engine officer will ensure that the SHUTOFF does not accidentally get shut down–slight reduction in GPM , due to the friction loss of the additional fitting and hose, which can be compensated for by increasing the pressure at the floor outlet and /or pumper …allows units to add lengths of hose without shutting down the water supply at the pumper or floor outlet
18
Q

ALL OF THE ABOVE PROCEDURES…FRONT OF STRETCH, BACK OF STRETCH, Water shut down, water not shut down, ONLY ON ORDERS OF ?

A

ENGINE OFFICER

when fire is confined by closing a door and/or moving to a safe area of refuge

19
Q

When connecting The 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” INCREASER to the shut off, the shut off handle will have to be pulled back slightly to allow the lugs on the fitting to clear the handle

A

this INCREASER, CONNECTED TO 2 1/2” NOZZLE is carried in STANDPIPE KIT
