Many states in the south felt tariffs raised prices and threatened to secede. South Carolina passed with the Nullification Act, declaring that they would not pay these “illegal” taxes. Jackson supported a compromise that appeased the state government that would gradually lower the tariffs, which South Carolina accepted.
