what is a service
any activity that fulfills human want or need and returns money to those who provide it
what are the 3 types of services
- consumer: provides services primarily to individual consumers, including retail, education, health , leisure
- business: meets primarily the needs of other businesses (professional, retail, transportation)
- public: offered by government to provide security and protection for citizens and businesses
what is a settlement
permanent collection of building and inhabitants
what is central place theory
explains that distribution of services based on the fact that settlements serve as enters of market areas for services. larger settlements are farther apart and provide for more people
what is central place
market centre for the exchange of services by people attracted from the surrounding area
what is a market area (hinterland)
area surrounding central place from which people are attracted to use the places for services (hexagon shaped)
what two things are used to determine a market area
- range: max distance you are willing to travel to use a service
- threshold: min number of people needed to support a service
what is the rank-size rule
pattern of settlements in a country such that the nth largest settlement is 1/n the populating of the largest settlement
what is the primate city rule
pattern of settlements in a country such that the largest settlements has more than twice as many people as the second ranking settlement
what is the gravity model:
model which holds that the potential use of a service at particular locations is directly related to the number of people in a location and inversely related to the distance people must travel to reach it
what is a periodic market
individual vendors come together on specific days
what is a global city? what factors are included to make it a global city?

- economic factors: corporations that affect the world
- political factors: headquarters of international organizations
- cultural factors: renowned institutions and facilities
- infrastructural factors: major air port, hospital etc
