Chapter 12 - Motivation Flashcards
Motivation
Forces w/in an individual that accounts for the level, direction, and persistence of effort expended at work.
Needs
Unfulfilled desires that stimulate people to behave in ways that will satisfy them
- Can be physiological or psychological
Abraham Maslow
Described a hierarchy of human needs.
- Built on lower-order needs and higher-order needs
- Deficit principle
- Progression principle
Lower-order needs
physiological, safety, and social needs in Maslow’s hierarchy.
Higher order-needs
esteem and self-actualization needs in Maslow’s hierarchy.
- Reflect psychological development and growth
Progression principle
People try to satisfy lower level needs first, then move step by step up the hierarchy.
- Happens until the level of self-actualization is reached`
Deficit principle
A satisfied need is not a motivator of behavior
- People act in ways that satisfy a deprived need
Aldred ERG theory
Collapses Maslow’s theory into 3
- Existence needs
- Relatedness needs
- Growth needs
Existence needs
desires for physiological and material well-being.
Relatedness needs
desires for satisfying interpersonal relationships.
