Simple stomached
Eat both animal and plant
Mouth of swine
Used primarily for grinding feed (mechanical)
Saliva - pH of 7.4 moistens feed and helps in chewing and swallowing
Produced in 3 pairs of glands - parotid, mandibular and submaxillary
Ptyalin - salivary amylase
Pig is only farm animal with any amount of enzyme
Breaks down starch

Capacity about 2 gallons
Gastric juices same as for monograstics - mucin, HCL, pepsin
Digestion of protein starts in stomach and ends in SI
Requires 24 hours to empty stomach
Small intestine of swine
About 60 ft long and 2.5 gallons
Function - continue process of digestion with - pancreatic juice: enzymatic, bile: chemical, duodenal juice: enzymatic, movement of intestinal Wall: mechanical
Absorption in jejunum and small amount In ileum
