Chapter 12 Flashcards
Define leadership
Formal vs. Informal
The act of influencing others toward a goal
Formal. Position of of authority to influence others
Informal. Influence through personal forms of power
What are the 6 key traits of leadership
Integrity Intelligence Extroversion (big5) Conscientious (big5) Open to experience (big5) Self esteem
What are the behavioral theories?
Task behavior Vs relationship
Task-Structuring people roles …get the goal accomplished, training employees for tasks
Personal relationship-Showing consideration, concern for employees, nurture employees
What are the 4 contingency theories
Fiedler’ contingency theory- leadership style is fixed (never changes and shouldn’t)
Situational leadership- view willing/unwilling matrix on powerpoint …change your leadership style to fit employees needs to get them to top right matrix square
Path-goal theory of leadership … tied directly to expectancy theory. Strong performance through motivation and correct leadership (motivational theory + leadership theory)
Vroom and Yetton normative decision model- uses the decision tree method (great on paper, but not realistic in workplace)
What is the difference between transformational and transactional leadership
Transformational - aligning employee goals with leaders goals … the employees look at the company’s perspective rather than personal wellbeing.
Trans. - employees demonstrate the right behaviors and leaders provide resources in exchange
Trust
Primary attribute associated with transformational leadership
When trust is broken it have serious effects on group performance
Positive expectation…. means the person you trust will not act opportunistically and has your interest in mind
Trust is a history process (familiarity based)
Dimensions of Trust
1. Competency
2. Consistency
3. Loyalty
4. openness … reliance on the persons to you the full truth (different than big 5)
High LMX
LOW LMX
HIGH- high quality trust-based relationship between leader and follower
(in group). Likes boss and is on the bosses good side
LOW- lower based trust (out group) does not click with boss, but does not necessarily reflect on performance
Leadership-member exchange (LMX) theory
What is servant leadership
A leadership role that seeks to serve the needs of others rather than others
Self-sacrifice
Ethics
Community development
What is authentic leadership
An approach advising leaders to stay true to their values
Introspectiveness is necessary for this
Approaches to leadership
Trait- leaders are born with the traits to be a leader or not (false theory)
…. traits show the possibility of an emerging leader
Behavior - specific behaviors differentiate leaders from non-leaders (leaders can be trained)
Contingency- “the role of context”
Contemporary- most recent research…
Leadership decision making
Authoritarian
Democratic
Laissez-faire … democratic, but the team takes responsibility and not solely the leader
Transformational leader’s traits
Charisma
Inspirational motivation
Intellectual stimulation
Individualized consideration
3 types of Trust
Deterrence based- easiest broken & easily repaired (not a lot of time invested in relationship)
Knowledge based- trust that has been built over an extended period of time… is bendable, but when it breaks it is must harder to repair
Identification based trust- a lot of time has passed in the relationship. It bends the most out of the three, and it is difficult to break. However if it does break it is nearly impossible to fix.
