Chapter 11tge N&b Of Experiments Flashcards
Small – n design
An experiment conducted with a one or few for participants to better understand the behavior of those individuals
Independent variable
A variable in an experiment that is manipulated by the researcher such that the levels of the variable change the cross or with in subjects in an experiment
Third variable problem
The presence of extraneous factors in the study that affect the dependent variable and can decrease the internal validity of the study
Confounding variable
An extraneous factor present in the study that may affect the results
Between subject variable
Each participant experience is only one level of the variable
Within subject variable
Each participant experiences all the levels of the variable
Random assignment
Participants are randomly assigned two levels of the independent variable in an experiment to control the individual differences as an extraneous variable
Order affect
Occur when the order in which the participants experience the condition in an experiment affects the results of the study
Testing effects
Occur when participants artistic more than once in the study with early testing affecting later testing
Matched design
Between subjects experiment that involves sets of participants match on a specific characteristic with each member of the set randomly assigned to a different level of the independent variable
Counterbalance
Control used in within subjects experiments were equal numbers of the participants are randomly assigned to a different order of the conditions
Latin square
Partial counterbalancing technique where the number of the orders of the conditions used is equal to the number of conditions in the study
Factorial design
An experiment or quasi experiment that includes more than one independent variable
Levels of the independent variable
Different situations of conditions that participants experience in an experiment because of the manipulation of the independent variable
Main effect
Test of the differences between all means for each level of independent variable is anANOVA
