Chapter 11 Vocab Flashcards
a vessel that carries blood away from the heart.
Artery
either of two heart valves through which blood flows from the atria to the ventricles; prevents return of blood to the atrium
Atrioventricular valves
a chamber of the heart receiving blood from the veins; superior heart chamber.
Atrium
a minute blood vessel connecting arterioles with venules.
Capillary
sequence of events encompassing one complete contraction and relaxation of the atria and ventricles of the heart.
Cardiac cycle
the blood volume (in liters) ejected per minute by the left ventricle.
Cardiac output
the minimum arterial pressure during relaxation and dilatation of the ventricles of the heart when the ventricles fill with blood.
Diastolic pressure
the cardiac muscle layer of the heart wall.
Myocardium
the membranous sac enveloping the heart.
Pericardium
the resistance to blood flow offered by the systemic blood vessels; a measure of the amount of friction encountered by blood.
Peripheral resistance
system of blood vessels that carry blood to and from the lungs for gas exchange.
Pulmonary circulation
the rhythmic expansion and recoil of arteries resulting from heart contraction; can be felt from the outside of the body.
Pulse
the modified cardiac muscle fibers of the conduction system of the heart.
Purkinje fibers
the heart’s natural pacemaker
SA node
valves that prevent blood return to the ventricles after contraction.
Semilunar valves
