cross cutting cleavages
Divisions within society that cut across demographic categories to produce groups that are more heterogeneous or different.
17th Amendment
provided for the direct election of senators instead of the original Constitutional provision that they be selected by state legislatures
15th amendment
the “right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude”
Voting Rights Act of 1965
a landmark piece of federal legislation in the United States that prohibits racial discrimination in voting
24th Amendment
ratified in 1964, banned the use of poll taxes
19th Amendment
gave women the right to vote.
retrospective voter
deciding to re-elect a candidate or party based on past performance
prospective voter
voting based on what the voter believes the candidate or party will do once in office
rational-choice voting
voting based on the voter’s individual interest and the candidate and party that may best accomplish it
party-line voting
when a voter supports a party’s ideology so that votes are cast for candidates representing that political party
motor voter law
requires all states to provide voter registration for citizens applying for or renewing a driver’s license.
Help America Vote Act (HAVA)
provided funding to help states update their voting equipment, and also created minimum election administration standards
provisional ballot
These are used when it is not clear that a voter is officially registered, so they can still vote
