Self Awareness
A persons sense of himself/herself as a separate person
Self-Concept
The attitude and behaviors that a person holds about him/himself (Who am I?)
Self-Esteem
Persons judgment and feelings about his/her worth
Origins of Self-Awareness
-In first months of life, an infant has no awareness of their bodies as their own;
-by 15 months acquire self awareness; rouge test
(waving in the mirror, they know its them)
-Self-concept comes from self-awareness;
The Evolving Self-Concept
- Preschoolers mention concrete characteristics;
- When School age, children begin to mention emotions, social groups, and comparisons to others
Measuring Self-Esteem
- scholastic competence
- athletic competence
- social acceptance
- behavioral conduct
- physical appearance
Measures for younger children: 4-7 years
- Harter and Pike’s measure:
- Using pairs of pictures asking child questions about pictures
Developmental change in Self-Esteem
- Highest in preschoolers
- Drops during the elementary school years due to social comparisons to others

- Method: Asses S-E in 5 domains of SPPC; longitudinal study
- Subjects: 435 3rd graders and 420 6th graders in medium-sized city in U.S
- Results:
