Chapter 10 Flashcards
Emotional Regulation
Ability to share, not have a temper tantrum
ER begins in infancy, as frontal lobe develops so does ER
Who said growth of attachment is between mother and infant
Bowlby
Attachment definition
enduring social-emotional relationship between infant and parent
Ainsworth measured attachment
3 minutes long, toddlers 12-18 months, results correlate with child outcomes in life, reactions to caregiver’s departure, and return
Secure attachment
-Explore toys
-Cry upon caregiver leaving
-After reunion, happy to see care giver’s return
Long Term: good social skills, well liked, happy kids
Insecure-Resistant Attachment
-Little to no exploration of toys
-Cry when caregivers leave
-Remain upset when CG returns
Long Term: Outcomes are not as positive, less obedient, likely to be socially withdrawn, more likely to be aggressive than secure)
Insecure Avoidant Attachment
-Explores toys
-Doesn’t cry when CG leaves, maybe not even notice
-Avoid/ignore when CG comes back
Long Term: outcomes less positive, less cooperative, more likely to be socially withdrawn, most aggressive
Insecure-Disorganized Attachment
- Child is cautious around mother (Not too close, but not avoidant)
- Looks confused when CG leaves, not sad nor mad or plays with toys
- Acts ODD when CG returns, freeze scream, hit self, throw things
Insecure attachment more likely if….
- Parents stressed with
- income, other children, their marriage, which increases insecure avoidant and disorganization
- The child’s temperament is difficult (Increases Insecure resistant)
- The child’s temperament is slow to warm up (Increases Insecure avoidant)
- The mother is depressed (Increased Insecure Resistant)
Secure attachment is more likely if…..
- The parent is sensitive & Predictive to child’s needs
- The parents engages in infant-caregiver play
- The parents are not overly stressed
- The parents have a “working model” of secure attachment like their own parents
Temperament definition
behavioral styles that are fairly stable across situations and are biologically based
Thomas and Chess identified 3 patters
Easy- usually happy, adapt easily to new situations, has regular routines
Difficult-unhappy, hard to comfort, disturbed by noise, easily distracted
Slow to warmup- show mild negative reactions to new situations, quiet, shy
