Explain SDG 1 (no poverty) and its targets.

A

End extreme poverty in all forms by 2030. Targets are:
By 2030
- eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measures as people living on less than $1.25 a day.
- reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions.
- implement appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable.
Links to MDG 1 (eradicate extreme poverty and hunger). Poverty was reduced by half by 2000, reaching that goal.

Explain SDG 2 (zero hunger) and its targets.

A

Aims to end all forms of hunger and malnutrition. Targets include:
By 2030
- end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular poor and vulnerable people, to safe and nutritious food all year round
- end all forms of malnutrition, including achieving by 2025 the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons.
- double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.

Aims to promote physical and mental health and wellbeing and expand life expectancy. Targets include:
By 2030
- reduce global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births,
- end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least 12 per 1,000 live births and U5MR to at least 25 per 1,000 live births.
- end epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases,

Explain SDG 4 (quality education) and its targets.

A

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life long learning opportunities for all. Links to MDG 2 (achieve universal primary education) in ways such as this goal was achieved, however now the QUALITY of the education is now the focus. Targets include:
By 2030
- ensure that all girls and boys compete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and goal-4 effective learning outcomes
- ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and preprimary education so that they’re ready for primary education.
- ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality, technical, vocational and tertiary education.

A

Targets include:

  • end all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere
  • eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation,
  • eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation.

A

Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. Targets include:

  • sustain per capita economic growth in accordance with national circumstances and in particular at least 7% per GDP per annum in least developed countries.
  • achieve higher levels of economic productivity through diversification, technological upgrading and innovation, including through a focus on high-value added and labour-intensive sectors,
  • promote development oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalisation and growth of micro, small and medium sized enterprises, including through access to financial services.

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. Targets:

  • lack of income leads to lack of resources and infrastructure including healthcare, food, water and shelter.
  • poverty contributes to malnutrition which reduces immune function and increases mortality rates from preventable diseases particularly infectious diseases.

Why is SDG 2 important?

A
  • around 13% of the worlds population are undernourished and hunger and malnutrition are the biggest contributors to child mortality, causing 45% of the 6.3 million preventable deaths in children under 5.
  • eliminating hunger will reduce the risk of premature death and illness which can promote productive populations as people are more able to work or attend school.

  • gender equality is a human right,

  • decent work and full and productive employment means people are able to earn an income, which allows them to improve their standard of living.
  • nearly 2.2 billion people live below the US$2 poverty line and poverty eradication is only possible through stable and well paid jobs

A
  • when people aren’t well protected by the law they can be forced to leave their land and denied access to healthcare and education,
  • corruption is common in many developing countries particularly within the police and judicial systems.
