developmental psychology:
study of continuity and change across the life span.
maturation:
the process that produces genetically programmed changes in the body, brain, or behavior with increasing age.
embryo timeline:
organism that is 2 - 8 weeks after conception.
fetus timeline:
organism that is the 8th week - birth.
zygote timeline:
single cell containing chromosomes from both sperm and egg that is the first 2 weeks.
ECTOderm:
develops into nerve tissue and skin.
MESOderm:
develops into muscle and bone.
ENDOderm:
develops the body’s internal organs.
teratogens:
any external agent such as a chemical, virus, or type of radiation that can cause damage to the zygote, embryo, or fetus.
ex. syphilis, HIV, influenza.
fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS):
developmental disorder that stems from alcohol use by the mother during pregnancy.
motor reflexes:
automatic responses to an event.
cephalocaudal rule:
“top-to-bottom”
tendency for motor skills to emerge in sequence from the head to the feet.
proximodistal rule:
“center-to-out”
tendency for motor skills to emerge in sequence from the center to the periphery.
visual cliff experiment?
depth perception test.
baby crawls on glass.
habituation technique?
color/shape test.
triangle/circle test, babies get use to them.
