Chapter 11: Momentum Flashcards
What is momentum?
The product of an object’s mass and velocity
What is the law of conservation of momentum?
In a closed system where no external forces act on the system, momentum stays the same
What is impulse?
The change in an object’s momentum when a force acts on it
What is the equation for impulse?
Impulse= F x t (Ns)
F x deltaT = delta(mv)
Change in momentum
Linear momentum
Momentum in one dimension, eg a collision or explosion in a straight line
What does the area under a force-time graph show?
Change in momentum
What are some safety features of cars that increase time over which momentum changes?
Seat belts, crumple zones, air bags, etc.
What is an elastic collision?
A collision in which kinetic energy is conserved (mostly atomic scale)
What is an inelastic collision?
A collision in which kinetic energy is not conserved (transferred to heat, work done on car, etc.) (mostly large scale)
