Chapter 1.1 Intro to Bio Flashcards
What are the components of scientific argumentation?
Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning
What does CER stand for?
Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning
What does PMC stand for?
Programming, Metabolism, and Container
What are the levels of organization?
From smallest to largest, atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem, biome, and biosphere.
What does an organism need to be considered living?
Programming, Metabolism, and a container.
What is one way to differentiate between organism, organ system, organ, and organelle?
organelle is a mini organ, organ is a group of tissues, organ system is a system of organs, and an organism is made of organ systems.
Why is programming part of PMC?
Through genetic code, organisms can reproduce
Why is Metabolism part of PMC?
All living things require energy, thus they need a way to gain and lose energy.
Why is Container part of PMC?
A cell membrane helps the organism regulate its internal environment.
What would be another system to classify living and non-living organisms instead of PMC?
All living organisms are required to grow, reproduce, adapt, process energy, and have order.
Give a logical argument for why viruses are or are not living
Viruses aren’t living. This is because they don’t have a metabolism. We know that the PMC model requires all living organisms to have a metabolism. Since viruses do not have a metabolism they cannot be living.
What is a Biosphere?
The earth, a collection of biomes
What is a cell?
The smallest unit of life
What is an organelle?
a mini-organ within a cell
What is a molecule?
atoms bonded together.
What is an atom?
The building block of the universe
What is an organ system?
a group of organs that perform similar jobs.
What is a tissue?
a group of cells with similar functions
What is an organism?
a group of organ systems.
What is an organ?
a group of tissues that perform similar functions.
What is a population?
all members of one species within an area.
What is a biome?
a collection of similar ecosystems
What is the difference between ecosystems and communities?
ecosystems are all biotic and abiotic members of an area, communities are just the biotic factors.
What is a community?
all living organisms within an area.
