1.3 Bio flashcards
What is the formula for writing a hypothesis?
If (independent variable) increases/decreases, then (dependent variable) will increase or decrease.
Give a hypothesis for termites and blue pen lines
If the line is made of pen, then the termites will make a faster revolution of the circle
Give a hypothesis of the relation between muscle mass and max deadlift.
The more muscle mass a person has the more that they will deadlift.
Give a hypothesis of the relation between GDP per capita of a country and quality of life.
The higher the GDP per capita of a country, the higher its quality of life will be.
What is the dependent variable in the termite lab
Time spent revolving around the circle
What is the independent variable in the termite lab
The material used in making the circle
What is a control group?
A group where the independent variable doesn’t change.
Why are control groups important for data?
They help us see how much the independent variable affected the dependent.
What would be a good control group for a medicinal experiment? Why?
A group that takes a sugar pill, the pill makes the people think they are taking the medicine.
What do error bars look like?
An I
What would be a good control group for an experiment on 5k time improvement and ingesting a sports drink every day?
A group that ingested sugar water.
Why do we use error bars?
They help show data perciseness visually.
What are error bars?
Bars showing one standard deviation of a set of data on a graph.
What does it mean if error bars overlap?
There is no statistically significant difference between the data sets.
What does it mean if error bars don’t overlap?
There is a statistically significant difference and needs a statistical analysis to determine if it is indeed different.
