3.1 Bio Flashcards
What is a niche?
A specific role a population has in a community or ecosystem.
What is the difference between a fundamental and realized niche? Why are they different?
fundamental, is the hypothetical biggest range an animal could have. realized is the actual niche in the habitat. Competition from other populations separates the two.
What happens if 2 animals niches overlap? What if they are the same niche?
The niches will be partitioned. One animal will go extinct.
What is competition, give an example
-/- a deer and opossum that eat the same food.
What is mutualism, give an example
+/+ fish that will eat parasites off of larger fish.
What is commensalism, give an example
+/0 barnacles on a whale that filter water for food and don’t affect the whale.
What is parasitism, give an example
-/+ a flea lives off of a dog, making the dog sick.
What is herbivory, give an example
-/+ A beaver cuts down a tree.
What is predation give an example.
+/- a lion kills a gazelle.
What is the difference between facultative and obligatory symbiosis?
Facultative is beneficial but not needed to live, obligatory is needed to live.
What is the difference between parasitism and predation?
Parasitism is a long term encounter, predation is short and one time only.
