Employee and labor relations
Help an organization manage itself efficiently, improve relations between employees, bridge communication gaps, conduct performance management and assist in settling disputes between employees
Employee relations (er)
describes the relationship between an employee and employer
ER takes care of the employer-employee relationships practical, legal, emotional and physical aspects by:
- Resolving problems between the managers/employers and the staff/employees
- creating a safe environment where all organization members feel comfortable working both mentally and physically
- building a trustworthy and respectful relationship between employees and employers
An organization must consider what 2 key principles when improving employee relations?
Honesty and keeping promises
What are some responsibilities of an employee relations manager?
-urging managers and workers to meet weekly or monthly on a one-on-one basis to build rapport
-eliminating any issues present between top management and workers
-conducting regular interviews and taking feedback from employees
creating and sending feedback to workers in regard to proposed policy changes
-considering approaches to show representatives that the organization values and recognizes their efforts
-organizing company benefits and plans for employees
What are labor relations?
Engagements between the employees, management, and labor unions that allow them to make beneficial decisions within an organization
What is unionization?
The process whereby employees of a firm or organization may become part of a labor union and agree that the union will act as a bargaining tool against employers in the case of any injustice
What is the initial phase in organizing a union?
Understanding the major problem
What is the second phase of organizing a union?
Writing a list of demands that employees will make
What is the third phase of organizing a union?
Union elections- for elections to take place at least 30%of the worker population should sign some sort of authorization form
What is the most common violation?
occurs when the employer or organization does not agree to negotiate with the union representing the employees on a particular matter
What is a hot cargo agreement?
occurs between an employer and the union when the employer agrees to stop doing business with another employer in dispute with the union
Legal action can be taken against those liable for it within how many months?
6 months
What does the NLRB do?
- investigates any incidents reported or changes made
- facilitates settlements
- enforces orders
- introduces new rules and regulations regarding labor laws and unfair practices
