Chapter 11: Deaf or HOH Flashcards
Physiological definition for Deaf + HoH
Deaf = cannot hear 90db or higher.
HoH = cannot hear below 90db
Educational definition of Deaf + HoH
Deaf = Cannot hear, with or without a hearing aid
HoH = Needs a hearing aid.
Congenitally Deaf
= deaf from birth
Prelingual deaf
= deaf post-birth
Hearing Threshhold (with Decibles):
Mild
Moderate
Mod-Severe
Severe
Profound
Mild 26-40db
Moderate 41-55db
Mod-Severe 56-70db
Severe 71-90db
Profound 91db
Prevalence of hearing impairment of school age children
0.10%
When is sound normally painful?
125 db +
Audiometric Zero
The lowest level at which a person with normal hearing can perceive sound.
Hertz
- What is it?
- What frequencies can we hear?
- What hz is speech?
- The pitch of vibration (1 hz = 1 second cycle)
- We hear range 20-20,000hz
- Speech is approx. 500-2000hz
Otacoustic Emissions
-To determine how well the cochlea is functioning
Pure Tone Audiometry
- What is it
- What does it find
- Establishes a person’s threshhold for hearing different hz
- Pure tone threshold = softest sound must be audible at least 50% of the time
What is the hearing process?
The transformation of acoustic energy into mechanical energy, into neural energy
Where is the choclea? (inner/middle/outer ear)
Inner Ear
Conductive Hearing Impairment
-Loss that interferes with the transer of sound along the middle/outer ear’s conductive pathway
What is ensorineural Hearing Impairment
- Loss from the inner ear
- More serious
3 components of Sign Languages?
- Hand shape
- Body Location
- Movement attached
IQ vs Academic Achievement of children with hearing impairment?
Normal IQ, but significantly worse academic achievement.
*Exception = deaf children coming from deaf homes.
6 Features of (D)eaf culture
- Linguistic differentiation
- Attitudinal deafness
- Behavioral norms
- Endogamous marriage patterns
- Historical awareness
- Voluntary organizational networks
Deaf Activism: 3 current examples
- Gallaudet Experience
- Cochlear Implant debate
- Genetic Engineering Debate
Total Communication method of Education for HoH/ Deaf Children?
- Combo of oral and manual
- However is different than ASL and can be slow and awkward so decreasing in popularity
How many deaf children having hearing parents?
95%
What % of deaf parents give birth to hearing children?
90%
Where is the auricle and what is its purpose?
It is the protruding portion of the outer ear that collects and funnels sound
The outer ear consists of the ________ and ____________
Auricle; external auditory canal
