chapter 11 Flashcards
nerous system consist of
brain spinal cord and the nerves
what are the two organ systems
endocrine controls horomes nervous system uses electrical signals to transmit messages
central nervous system
conisists of the brain and signal cord
peripheral nerous system
consist of the vast network of nerves throughout the body
neuroglia also called glial cells
neuroglia are the supportive cells of the nervous system (GLia means glue and neurogila means support)
oligodendrocytes does
form myelin sheaths in the brain and spinal cord: speed signal conduction
ependymal ceels
lines spinal cord and cavities of the brain: some secrete cerebrospinal fluid, where as others have a cilia and aid fluid circulation
microglia
perform phagocytosis: engulfs microorganisms and cellular debris
astrocytes
extend through brain tissue, nourish neurons help form blood brain barriers
schwann cells
froms myelin sheath around nerves in pns, form neruilemma
sensory neurons
touch pressure heat cold or chemicals and then stimuli to the cns
interneurons
connect spinal motor and sensory neurons
motor neurons
relay messages from the Brain to the muscles and glands
multipolar neurons
most common have one axon multiple dendrites
bipolar neurons
have to processes and axon and a dendrite with a cell body in between the two processes
