Causes of the Reformation
The invention of the printing press

The appointing of relatives to Church jobs regardless of merit

Holding more that one Church job at the same time
Absenteeism
A priest or bishop being absent from their parish or dicese for long periods of time
The sale of indulgences
The selling of special prayers claimed to reduce the time a soul spent in purgatory
Justification by Faith alone
Only faith in God could get a person into heaven
What did Luther write
Luther wrote out the ninety-five thesis. These were arguments
Papal Bull
A formal letter and command
What did Pope Leo do?
Pope Leo threatened Luther with excommunication
Excommuncation
Expulsion from the Catholic Church and being unable to receive the sacraments
The Reformation
Luthers supporters became know as Protestants
Luther then translated the Bible into German
War broke out shortly after his death until Peace of Augsburg, when it was agreed that each ruler would choose the reliogen in his state

The courts of Inquisition
Many would be burned alive in public
Simony, pluralism, nepotism, absenteeism and the state of indulgences were banned
Priests could not marry
The counter reformation was successful in preventing the further spread of Protestism
The Results of th Reformation
The catholic countries and the protestant countries fought each other
There was an increase of education because the two reliogens wanted to spread propaganda
Courts of Inquisition
To arrest, try and punish anyone who they thought was a threat to Church teachings
