Chapter 10 Physiology lecture Flashcards
What is a motor unit
Nerve and all the muscle fibers it connects with
What is the “All or none principle”
Either the action potential is strong enough to contract all the muscle fibers or it is not strong enough to contract any.
What is a slow twitch muscle? What type is it?
Muscle fibers not capable of high intensity contractions and are associated with endurance and postural muscles.
type 1
What is a fast twitch muscle? What type is it ?
Muscle fibers that are capable of producing high intensity, high velocity twitches, help with sudden burst of energy involved in activities like sprinting , jumping
type 2
What is the function of a muscle spindle?
Sense strength and/or range of length change in a muscle and cause a contraction
What is a golgi tendon?
Respond to high levels of tension which will cause the muscle to relax.
List 4 components of the sliding filament theory
Actin
Myosin
Tropomyosin
Troponin
What is a crossbridge?
Where the actin and myosin contract and come together
What are 3 types of contractions?
Concentric, eccentric , isometric
Describe how the type of contractions work with force
Concentric- movement occurs when the muscle lengthens
Eccentric- Slightly controls and lenghtens
Isometric- Nothing moves, no change
