Chapter 10: Photosynthesis Flashcards
Sustain themselves without eating anything derived from other organisms
Autotrophs
Live on compounds produced by other organisms
Heterotrophs
Light reactions produce:
ATP, NADPH, O2 (waste product)
The three phases of the Calvin Cycle
Fixation, Reduction, Regeneration
Fixation
CO2 combines with ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP)
Reduction
ATP and NADPH are used to reduce the sugar; one G3P comes off to form a sugar
Regeneration
The other five G3P continue on in the cycle to regenerate ribulose bisphosphate
Light Reactions
Use light from the sun to produce ATP and NADPH
Dark Reactions
Fix CO2 to produce a sugar
Photosynthesis equation
6CO2 + 12H2O + Light energy –> C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O
The process that converts solar energy into chemical energy
Photosynthesis
Absorbs purple and red light; reflects green light
Chlorophyll A
Enzyme that joins ribulose bisphosphate and CO2 in fixation
Rubisco
