Chapter 10: Muscle Tissue And Organization Flashcards
What are the 5 muscle functions?
1) movement
2) posture
3) pump blood
4) stabilize joints
5) generate body heat
What are the 5 properties of muscle tissue?
1) excitability: able to respond to Stimuli
2) conductivity: The ability to transmit electrical events along the cell membrane
3) contractility: ability to generate tension and shorten cell length for movement
4) elasticity: ability to return to original length after movement
5) extensibility: Ability to be stretched beyond resting the length
What is insertion?
Attachment of a tendon to the moveable bone
What is orgin?
Attachment of attending to the stationary bone
What is the endomysium
Electrically insulates muscle fibres (Areolar connective, tissue and reticular fibres)
What is the parimysium?
Surrounds fascicles (muscle bundle) (made of dense, irregular connective tissue with blood vessels and nerves)
What is the epimysium?
Surrounds entire muscle (made of dense irregular connected tissue)
What is the agonist?
The primary mover
-produces a specific movement when it contracts
What is the antagonist
- opposes the action of the agonist (biceps versus triceps)
What is the synergist?
- assists the agonist
What are the 6 criteria for muscle naming?
1) muscle action
2) specific body region
3) muscle attachments
4) orientation of muscle fibres
5) muscle shape and size
6) muscle head/proximal tendons
What is autorhythmic?
Able to generate electrical impulses without nerve stimulation
What is involuntary control?
Autonomic nervous system (ANS) influences the rate and strength of contraction
How does ageing affect muscle?
Ageing = loss of muscle mass/function (sarcopenia)
