How does Grandmama undermine the authority that Miss Rottenmeier demands?
Grandmama contradicts Rottenmeier and defends Heidi. She also calls Heidi by the name she has always known, rather than the names Rottenmeier has given her.
Why is Heidi sad in this chapter? Why does she keep it a secret?
Heidi has realized that she cannot go home whenever she wants to. She chooses not to tell the Sesemanns because she doesn’t want to use them or have them think that she is ungrateful.
Grandmama notices Heidis’ sadness. What does she suggest Heidi do?
She instructs Heidi that you can always tell God about your troubles even when you can’t tell anyone else. God will help us when we ask.
What causes the sudden change in Heidi’s ability to read?
Grandmamma convinces Heidi that she would be able to read if she tried. Peter’s inability to read is abnormal. Grandmama also promises to give her a book when learns to read.
“Now listen to me, Heidi, you’ve never learnt to read because you believed what Peter told you. Now you must believe what I say, that in a little while you will be able tor had quite will, as most children do, being on the whole like you and not like Peter.
