Infancy
Early emotions
Present in humans and other animals
Appears in first 6 months
Those are surprise, joy,anger,sadness, fear, disgust
Self conscious emotions
Appear in first 18 months-2 years
Start following society’s standards and rules
Empathy, jealousy, embarrassment start appearing
Infant smiling : reflex and social smile
Reflex smile: does not occur because the baby is happy, occurs during 1st month after birth. Is a external stimuli
Social smile: is response to happiness, occurs about 2/3 months of age
Stranger anxiety
Fear and wariness of strangers
Intense between 9+12 months
Affected by social context and stranger characteristics
Really depends on the child
Separation anxiety
Sign of attachment
distress when familiar caregiver leaves
Most obvious @ 9-14 months
Emotional disorder if still strong after age 3

2-4 years: ability to talk about emotions
4-5; understand same event can elicit different feelings in different people

Time of emotional turmoil but not constantly
Girls more vulnerable to depression

Create emotionally satisfying lifestyles; predictable and manageable
Older adults have more positive emotions, report better control of emotions

Older adults become more selective about relationships.
Seek more emotional related goals then knowledge related goals
