Can’t be interpreted without context, descibes physical enviornment/place/time. E.g. here, that, then etc.
Diexis
- Personal diexis: you, me, him, her
- Spatial diexis: here, there, by, that, come
- Temporal diexis: the day after tomorrow, now, soon, recetly
Sentence types:
Declarative - subject+verb, make a statement
Interrogative - verb+subject, ask for information, make an inquiry
Imperative - verb, make an order
Speech acts
Direct speech act: function and structure match
Indirect speech act: function and structure do not match
Face-threatening act
When you say something that is a threat to another persons self image
Face saving act
Lessen the threat to face, by usning indirect speech act or adding please
Positive face
The need to feel connected and as a part of the group, humans want to be liked by others
Negative face
The need to be independent and free from immposition
