Chapter 1 Flashcards
The Divine source
Language was provided by a god.
The natural sound source
Imitation becomes representation
(The bow-wow theory)
Under the natural sound source, words similar to the sound the objects make are used to describe the object.
(The pooh-pooh theory)
Under natural sound source, speech developed emotional cries, e.g. ah, ouch.
Onomatopheia
Words that sound similar to the noises they describe.
The social interaction source (the ye-he-ho source)
Language developed when humans used sounds to coordinate their work since they lived in big groups, this later developed into speech.
The Physical adaptation source
Physical features that support speech, standing up enabled speech.
The tool-making source
Standing up made it possible for humans to use their hands to make tools which shows complex brain activity. The areas in the brain which controlles hand movement and speech organs are situated close to each other - might have an evolutionary connection. Also creating tools from objects is similar to putting words and sounds together to form meaning.
The genetic source
Humans are born with the ability to use language, this is proven since deaf children can learn sign language without actually using any speech-organs.
The Innatenes hypothesis
Human genetics is the source of speech.
